Symposium on New Developments in Defect Mechanics - a unique intellectual event

Faculty from Caltech, UC Berkeley , University of Michigan, Georgia Tech, Brown University, University of Calgary, University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, Imperial College, London, and UCSD and researchers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories congregated to UCSD  on January 18-19, 2014 to attend the third in a series of symposia on Multiscale Dislocation Dynamics and to honor Professor Michael Ortiz  on his 60th birthday. Faculty also brought their graduate students and postdocs to engage in such a powerful intellectual activity. Read More

Professor Marc Meyers receives the Albert Easton White Award,  "For inspired teaching for 45 years, and for leadership in the field of Materials Science and Engineering through research, organization of conferences and symposia, and writing textbooks used globally."

Dr. Chris McGuffey awarded Air Force Office of Scientific Research Young Investigator Program Grant

Dr. McGuffey's project, titled Dynamics of high-intensity laser-driven proton beam transport in solid density materials was among 42 nationwide selected for funding by the program. Dr. McGuffey is a member of High Energy Density Physics Group led by Professor Farhat Beg in the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project will investigate transport of proton beams produced by high intensity lasers.

"When I started college, I thought global warming was stupid, trees needed to be cut down, and everything ran on the guiding hand of the market," Derek Chung says. The 23-year-old with mussed-up hair is Skyping from a hostel in Malaysia, the 16th country he's passed through during an eight-month "soul search."

In Memoriam: Professor Juan C. Lasheras

Juan C. Lasheras, University of California San Diego distinguished professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Bioengineering, passed away on February 1, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. He was 69 years old.

In Memoriam: Professor Siavouche Nemat-Nasser

University of California San Diego engineering professor emeritus Siavouche "Sia" Nemat-Nasser passed away on January 4, 2021 due to complications of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He was 84 years old. 

Professor Nemat-Nasser was a Distinguished Professor of Mechanics and Materials in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering. He officially retired from UC San Diego in 2019 but remained active as a researcher through his Center of Excellence for Advanced Materials (CEAM).

In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Shao-chi Lin

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Shao-chi Lin at the age of 95. He is fondly recalled by past students and associates as a skilled and compassionate educator, guide, and investigator, as well as a vibrant contributor to the campus community. Lin achieved global recognition as an engineer of high repute, focusing on the field of gas dynamics.
