U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked MAE in the top 20 in mechanical and aerospace engineering. UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering was ranked 11th among the nation's 191 engineering schools. The Jacobs School, which US News this year ranked 5th among the nation's public engineering schools, received $141 million in federal, state and industry research support in the 2007 fiscal year. That funding ranked the Jacobs School 4th in the nation in research expenditures per faculty member and 9th in total research expenditures.
The rankings are based on expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. The data come from surveys of more than 1,200 programs and some 14,000 academics and professionals that were conducted in fall 2007.
Our undergraduate programs are accredited by the engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org) leading to the B.S. degree in mechanical and aerospace. MAE also offers a non-accredited engineering program leading to the B.S. degree in environmental engineering. The B.S. programs require a minimum of 196 units.
All MAE programs of study have strong components in laboratory experimentation, numerical computation and engineering design. Design is covered throughout the curricula by open-ended homework problems, by laboratory and computer courses which include student-initiated projects, and finally by senior design project courses which involve teams of students working to solve engineering design problems brought in from industry.
