Financial assistance is available from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the form of fellowships, traineeships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships. Award of financial support is competitive and stipends range from approximately $7,500.00 to $ 19,000.00 for the academic year, plus tuition and fees.
Departmental support goes to first year Ph.D. students in the form of university fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships. The department also has available a few private fellowships that are provided to the department through the Division of Engineering that again, are reserved for first year students.
Support decisions are based on the strength of the student's file. The MAE Graduate Affairs Committee looks at GPA, GRE scores, previous institution and letters of recommendation. The Committee also looks at the student’s area of interest to determine if there is sufficient active research in MAE for the student to benefit.
Continuing students most commonly receive support in the form of a research assistantship or teaching assistantships during the academic year.
More information on fellowships and funding at UCSD is available at the Office of Graduate Studies web site.
