About Us
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
(MAE) is a large interdisciplinary engineering
department covering Mechanical Engineering,
Aerospace Engineering, Chemical
Engineering, Engineering Sciences, and
Environmental
Engineering. At present, we have
approximately 1000 undergraduate and 120 graduate
students. The department is part of the
Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of
Engineering at the University
of California, San Diego (UCSD) which grants
approximately 72% of the university's B.S. degrees,
38% of the M.S. degrees, and 55% of the PhD
degrees. Although the MAE department was
founded only 39 years ago, our educational program
and laboratory facilities are outstanding and fully
developed, supported by a dedicated staff and great
research faculty. Indeed, in a recent U.S.
News and World Report survey, we ranked in the top
20 nationwide in both aerospace and mechanical
engineering. Our experimental and
computational facilities are state of the art,
including three new buildings: the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall,
the Computer Science and Engineering
building and the California
Institute for Telecommunications and Information
Technology (Cal-(IT)²).
